The 20 Rectangles Design Challenge was a project where I had to make an object or scene out of 20 cardboard rectangles. I had about 2 weeks to brainstorm, design, and build my project. The final model had to fit within a 8"x8"x8" box. It had to be spray painted only one color and it had to be exactly 20 rectangles, no more and no less. A working prototype also had to be made out of material similar to the cardboard in the final model. It had to stand on all six sides and be put together with clear glue.
For my design, I made an office cubicle. I chose this because I felt it would be something different and I knew it could satisfy all of the constraints. I had the option of choosing a design from object design, information design, environmental design, and experience design. An office cubicle falls under the environmental design category because it is a place where someone works.
My main take-a-way from this project was that it was not too difficult to complete, but I defiantly had to keep track of my work to make sure I was staying within the constraints. I had to make sure it would stand on all six sides and that it had exactly 20 rectangles. If I did not do this, I would have had to start over. This would not have been good because we had limited material and time.
